Cordless Robotic Pool Cleaner: Meet the Fairland X60

Battery-powered, cable-free and completely independent of your pool pump. Here is how the Fairland X60 maps your pool, scrubs every surface and leaves you with the weekend back.

Pushing a vacuum head up and down the pool on a hot Saturday is nobody’s idea of a good time. Robotic cleaners were already a big step up, and the newest generation goes further still. The Fairland X60 carries its own battery, has no cable at all, and relies on AI mapping to work out its own route — you simply lower it in and leave it to get on with things. Pianist and TikTok creator 🎼Aubrey Baardman💎PianoMan🎹 (@aubreybaardman) picked one up and filmed the whole journey, so we have gathered his videos throughout this guide to show the X60 doing the real work.

Robotic, Suction or Pressure: How They Differ

People tend to call every automatic cleaner by the same name, yet the three main types work in very different ways — and that shows up on your electricity bill. A suction cleaner, the classic “Kreepy Krauly” design, connects to the suction line and relies on your pool pump to pull it along. It is inexpensive upfront, but it adds load to the pump and pushes up power usage. A pressure cleaner generally depends on its own booster pump, which means even more electricity.

A robotic cleaner stands on its own. It has onboard motors and brushes to scrub the pool surfaces, catches dirt in a built-in basket, and never draws on your pool pump. The X60 then removes the last tether: it is powered by a rechargeable battery, so no cable trails through the water and swimmers can share the pool with it while it is busy.

Five Reasons It Works for Pools from Gauteng to the Cape

Saving yourself the effort is only part of the appeal. A cordless robot also solves several very local headaches.

  • It copes with whatever falls inJacaranda flowers in Pretoria, leaf drop in autumn, a film of fine dust after a dry week on the Highveld — the 180-micron filtration deals with it far more effectively than a hand vacuum.
  • It does not lean on your pumpDebris ends up in the X60’s own 3.2-litre basket, which keeps your sand filter cleaner for longer and spares the pump from hauling a cleaner around all day.
  • Every surface gets scrubbedSpinning brushes work algae and the oily sunscreen ring off the floor, walls and waterline — a job a passive suction cleaner cannot do.
  • Charging costs next to nothingTopping up a battery uses a fraction of the power of running a pump for hours. The numbers are further down.
  • Nothing to tangle, nothing plugged in poolsideWith no floating cable, there is nothing to snag on the steps and no socket in use near the water while the cleaner runs.

Getting It Running

Smart pool gadgets have a reputation for complicated setup. This one is refreshingly simple: charge the battery, link it to your WiFi and lower it into the water.

Smart Route Planning and Phone Control

Plenty of cleaners wander about at random and hope for the best. The X60 is different: it builds a map of your pool, works out a sensible cleaning path, and lets you run everything from your phone — start it, stop it, set a schedule and choose how long each cycle lasts.

Walls and Waterline, Not Just the Floor

Specs only tell you so much, so here is the real test. In a single cycle the X60 covers the floor, then climbs the walls and scrubs along the waterline too.

What It Actually Costs to Run

Running costs are where a battery robot earns its money back without fuss. The X60’s 262Wh battery needs roughly four hours to charge fully, which works out to about 0.26 units of electricity — less than R1 per charge on a typical tariff. A single charge also covers more than one clean: floor mode runs for up to six hours, enough for several cleans before it needs plugging in again.

Now set that against a suction cleaner pulled by a 1.1 kW pool pump. Matching the coverage could mean an extra two to three hours of pump time every day, which quickly adds R250–R400 a month to your electricity bill — on top of extra wear on the pump and filter.

Estimated running cost per month

Suction cleaner (additional pump hours)approx. R300+
Vacuuming by handYour Saturday

Example figures assume a tariff of around R3/kWh and typical run times. What you pay will depend on your municipality or utility, the size of your pump and how often you clean.

Even with cautious assumptions, a few seasons of electricity savings cover a real portion of the purchase price — and that is before you factor in the chemicals you save when the water stays consistently clean and well circulated.

Buyer’s Checklist: How the X60 Measures Up

Robotic cleaners vary a lot, and the lowest price tag seldom turns out to be the best deal. These are the points worth checking on any model, along with how the X60 performs on each.

  • Is it cable-free?Yes — the X60 is fully cordless and needs no caddy, so nothing tangles and you can swim while it cleans.
  • Which surfaces does it clean?Budget models stick to the floor. The X60 also climbs the walls and scrubs the waterline, where greasy residue builds up, so the whole pool is done in one cycle.
  • How does it find its way?AI mapping plans an efficient path and steers around obstacles, with cycle options of 0.5h, 1h or 2h and full control through the app.
  • How long does the battery last?Up to six hours in floor mode, or roughly 3.5 hours in combined floor, wall and waterline mode, from a four-hour charge.
  • Is the basket easy to empty? The 3.2-litre basket opens from the top and filters to 180 microns — a quick rinse and it is ready again.
  • Can you get parts and support locally?Brushes, tracks and filters are wear items. Buy from a supplier that keeps consumables on hand and deals with warranty claims locally — which is what our branches do.

“A pool cleaner only pays off if it is still running years from now — and that comes down to whether you can buy its spares close to home.”

Simple Habits That Keep It Cleaning for Years

The X60 needs very little attention, but very little is not the same as none. Build these into your routine and it will keep performing.

  • Net out heavy debris firstAfter a big storm, scoop out the leaves before the robot goes in. It is designed to finish a pool off, not dig it out of a swamp.
  • Empty and rinse the basket each timeA full basket reduces suction, and the robot starts missing the fine dirt.
  • Lift it out between cyclesLeaving it submerged for days on end exposes the brushes and seals to chlorine non-stop, and they wear out sooner.
  • Charge correctly and store it dryKeep the robot and charger out of direct sun and moisture — whether that is Gauteng summer heat or humid KZN coastal air — so the battery and seals last.

Our Verdict on the X60

For the majority of pool owners, it is well worth it. You do pay more upfront, but you get your free time back, running costs are close to zero compared with pump-driven cleaners, and the water stays cleaner and healthier week after week. Thanks to the cordless AI design you really can drop it in and forget about it — and with 14 Pool Trade branches across South Africa, Namibia and Mauritius, brushes, filters and expert help are never far away.

X60 Questions We Get Asked

Can I swim while the X60 is cleaning?

You can. It runs on its own battery and is cordless, so no mains cable goes into the pool. As with all pool equipment, keep the charger dry and well clear of splashes.

Will I still need to run my pool pump?

Yes. Circulating the water and spreading the chemicals is the job of your pump and filter, while the X60 takes care of scrubbing and picking up debris. The upside is that the pump no longer has to pull a cleaner around, so you can often cut back its running hours.

How large a pool will one charge cover?

A full charge gives up to about six hours of floor cleaning, enough for most home pools. In full floor, wall and waterline mode you get around 3.5 hours, which still handles a typical pool with time to spare.

Does it suit fibreglass, marbelite or painted pools?

It does. The X60 is made for all standard pool finishes — tiles, fibreglass, liner, marbelite and painted concrete. Describe your pool to the team at your nearest branch and they will confirm the fit.

Is there a phone app?

There is. A dedicated app connects to the X60 so you can start, stop and schedule cleans, check its status and receive maintenance reminders.
